The Movie Invictus showing Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman

Invictus tells the inspiring story of how Nelson Mandella (Morgan Freeman) joins forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pineaar (Matt Damon) to bring about change in his country. Large riffs exist between the blacks and the whites in South Africa which has been terrorized by aparthied for many years. How does one bring a country together which has been so abused? Can the blacks ever trust the whites?

Morgan Freeman does a good job of portraying a strong and good man who wants to better his country, make it competitive in every way, and bring it into the 21st century. By getting the national rugby team to perform better than its best, the positive feelings permeate the society and start to generate a nationalism, a patriotism. Whether one is black or white one is South African first. This is a difficult task for a black man who now is the president of a country that was lead by whites who were oppressive racists.

The rugby team proves to invinceable and so does their president. He believes that people can do better than they think and they must do it for their country.

Rugby fans should enjoy this movie as well as those that enjoy seeing the underdog triumph. It’s another well-done movie by director Clint Eastwood.

Sherlock Holmes smoking a pipe

Detective Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his partner Watson (Jude Law) take on their Nemesis to save all of England.

I must admit that when I first saw the previews for this movie, I thought that it was a spoof and that it would be a comedy. Although it had its comedic moments, it was a drama that the Sherlock Holmes of old would have been proud to be a part of. Well done!

Robert Downey does a fine job of portraying the famous sleuth. He is in a deep depression which Doctor Watson points out that only a good-solid case worthy of his talents will get him out of. He gets into such a detective case and the movie is underway.
Towards the end we find out that Dr. Moriarty (Holmes’s arch nemisis) has his hand in the plot.
The author’s fascination with gadgets and cutting-edge devices makes it all the more appealing. All-in-all it is a good detective story.
